Discover ‘La Caverne du Pont Neuf’ by JR: a monumental and temporary artwork
From 6 to 28 June 2026, Paris’s oldest bridge will undergo a transformation.
With *La Caverne du Pont Neuf*, artist JR presents a spectacular reinterpretation of this historic monument, directly echoing the 40th anniversary of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s legendary wrapping (to be celebrated in 2025). Accessible free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the installation can be admired on foot, by bike, from the quays or from the water. Plan your visit now on the project’s official website.
An exploration of the origins of Paris

In creating this work, JR drew inspiration from the old Lutetian limestone quarries (the famous “Paris stone”) that were used to build the bridge, which was opened in 1607. By replacing wood with stone and incorporating the capital’s very first paved pavements, the Pont Neuf revolutionised urban life.
JR’s installation creates a dialogue between the past and the present, contrasting the raw power of the original rock with the elegance of the City of Light.
“My vision draws inspiration from both the history and the present of this iconic bridge. As an admirer of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s legacy, I share their conviction that art must challenge our certainties. The debate that such a work sparks in the public sphere is just as valuable as the work itself.” — JR

Supported by the L'Amicale des Ponts de Paris endowment fund, this artistic project receives no public funding. It is entirely self-funded through the sale of JR’s works and sponsorship from private partners (Snap Inc., Bloomberg Philanthropies, Paris Aéroport and Salesforce).

Whilst the exterior of La Caverne du Pont Neuf is set to transform the Parisian skyline, the interior of the building will open its doors to an intimate and mysterious adventure.
JR promises us “a symbolic journey, a step into the unknown, a journey within oneself”, conceived around a subtle interplay between fullness and emptiness.
