Built nearly 500 years ago at the behest of Louis XIV, the Hôtel des Invalides is much more than just an architectural masterpiece. Originally designed as a gigantic hospice to accommodate 4,000 wounded soldiers, this site is a privileged witness to French history.
Its emblem, the Dome Church, built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, held a record for a long time: at 107 metres high, its sparkling spire dominated the Paris skyline until the arrival of the Eiffel Tower.

Over the centuries, the site has changed in scale. Under Napoleon I, Les Invalides became the beating heart of official ceremonies and a veritable pantheon to the glory of the French army. It is here that the Emperor now rests, in a monumental tomb that attracts visitors from all over the world.
Since 1905, the building has also housed the Army Museum, created from the merger of the Artillery Museum and the Historical Museum of the Armed Forces, bringing together one of the richest collections of military history in the world.
